Lifting
Are lifting procedures very painful? How is the pain managed?
As the procedure date approaches, pain is the first thing people worry about. In everything you look up, comments that it was 'bearable' are mixed with comments that it 'hurt a lot', so it is unclear how to take them.
Pain differs depending on individual sensitivity and the conditions of the procedure, so it is hard to say for certain that 'it hurts this much'. This article sets out what affects pain and what is checked at the consultation to reduce discomfort.
What does the pain depend on?
Even with the same procedure, how much you feel differs depending on your individual pain sensitivity, the treatment area (such as areas close to bone or areas where the skin is thin), the intensity setting, and your physical condition that day. When heat or ultrasound energy is delivered, some people describe a prickling or hot feeling, or a reverberating feeling deep inside.
It is also known that lack of sleep and tension can have an effect. For this reason, even the same person having the same procedure may feel it differently from day to day.
What is checked in order to reduce pain?
Ways to reduce pain differ depending on the type of procedure, the area, and your individual condition, so it is advisable to get guidance at the consultation. Below are the items generally discussed, set out for reference.
| Item | General guidance for reference |
|---|---|
| What to tell us at the consultation | Whether you tend to be sensitive to pain, and any discomfort you had in previous procedures |
| Pain relief methods | Whether and how they are used is explained according to the type of procedure and your condition |
| Physical condition on the day of the procedure | If you are short of sleep or not feeling well, discuss the schedule |
| Communication during the procedure | Tell us right away if you are uncomfortable |
What should I do if the pain continues after the procedure?
Right after the procedure, there may be a tingling or sore, stiff feeling. However, if the pain keeps getting worse, is severe on one side only, or appears together with blisters or bruising, please contact the clinic where you were treated.
Rather than taking medication on your own, it is advisable to tell the clinic your symptoms and when they started and get guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Q. I am worried about pain. Would it be better to postpone the procedure?
A. There is no need to postpone because of worry about pain alone, but if you are very worried, mention it in advance at the consultation and discuss the options. How much is felt differs by type of procedure, so you can get guidance at the consultation.
Q. Can the procedure be stopped if it hurts too much?
A. If the discomfort is strong, please tell us right away instead of enduring it. We can discuss whether and how to continue while checking your condition.
Q. If the pain was severe, does that mean the effect is better?
A. It is hard to interpret the degree of pain as directly linked to the result of the procedure. It is not a problem if it does not hurt, and hurting does not mean it is better either.
