Thermage or Ultherapy Prime: which one suits me?

Gray's Dermatology (Haeundae, Busan)Last updated 2026-10-01

This is a question that often comes up in consultations. Both treatments are presented under the heading of lifting, so it is hard to tell what actually sets them apart.

The direction of the consultation depends on whether your concern is that the skin has become thin and lacks firmness, or that the jawline has lost definition.

The energy and the depth it reaches are different

Thermage uses radiofrequency (RF) energy and is known to mainly stimulate collagen in the dermis.

Ultherapy Prime uses ultrasound and is known to deliver energy deeper, down to the SMAS fascia layer. The SMAS is the fascia layer that lies over the facial muscles.

So which one is for me?

Whether the first thing that comes to mind when you look in the mirror is that your skin has become thinner and less firm, or that your jawline has blurred and dropped, is the starting point of the consultation. Which one is right is decided by examining your skin in person.

However, after your 40s it is common to have both concerns at once. In that case, the order and the interval are often discussed together rather than choosing just one.

At the consultation before treatment, items that need to be checked are often reviewed together, such as whether you are pregnant, any metal or devices implanted in your body, and inflammation or wounds in the treatment area.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Is the effect doubled if I have both?

A. It is not a simple addition. Depending on the condition of your skin, combining them may help in some cases, while focusing on one may be better in others, so this is decided during the consultation.

Q. If combined, how far apart are they done?

A. Sometimes they are done on the same day and sometimes with a gap in between. It depends on your skin condition and recovery, so it is difficult to give a single answer.

Q. Which of the two is less painful?

A. Individual sensitivity varies widely, so it is hard to generalize. Ways to reduce discomfort can be explained to you at the consultation, depending on the type of treatment and your condition.
