Skin basics
What should I prepare for my first dermatology visit?
If it is your first time at a dermatology clinic, you may feel lost about what to bring, whether you can go wearing makeup, and what to ask. You may also worry that without preparation you will not be able to explain things properly.
A consultation starts with checking your concern and your skin condition. This article sets out, at a general level, what is good to organize in advance and how a consultation proceeds.
What is good to organize before the consultation?
What helps is what your concern is, when it started, and how it has changed. If you note down when it started, in what situations it gets worse, and whether there is any care or treatment you have tried before, it becomes easier to explain.
Please also tell us the medications and dietary supplements you are taking, the cosmetics and skincare products you usually use, and any conditions you have and your allergy history. If you have photos from when the concern was severe, they may be useful as a reference.
| What to prepare | Why does it help? |
|---|---|
| What your concern is and when it started | Helps in looking into the cause and deciding the direction of care |
| Medications and dietary supplements you take | Needs to be checked because it can affect the care and prescription plan |
| Cosmetics and products you use | Helps in finding the cause of skin irritation |
| Medical history, allergies, whether you are pregnant | Needed to make a care plan safely |
| Notes on your questions | Check them during the consultation without leaving any out |
In what order does a consultation proceed?
Generally, after registration, your concern and medical history are checked through intake questions, and the medical staff examine your skin condition directly. After that, you are given an explanation of any necessary tests, care methods, and treatment options, and whether to go ahead is decided by you, the patient.
The way this is done may differ from clinic to clinic, so please ask for the specific flow when you book or register.
What should I keep in mind on the day of the visit?
Whether you can go wearing makeup depends on the clinic and the purpose of the consultation. If the consultation requires checking your skin condition, in some cases the makeup is removed first, so it is easier if you come with light makeup or allow time for washing your face.
Applying a product for the first time or doing new care such as exfoliation on the day of the consultation can cause confusion when your skin condition is checked, so it is better to avoid it. Writing down your questions and bringing them helps.
