Is it true that laser treatment is better done in winter?
The saying that laser is for winter is widely repeated. It is not entirely wrong, but if you decide by season alone, you miss an important factor.
In practice, how much ultraviolet light you are exposed to is often a bigger variable than the season.
Why do people say winter?
When ultraviolet light is weaker, sun care after treatment is generally known to be relatively easier. However, the influence of the season differs depending on the type of treatment.
That said, this is closer to meaning that less ultraviolet exposure makes care easier, not that winter itself is safe. If you often go skiing or spend time outdoors in winter, the conditions change.
What should I base the timing on?
First, look at your plans for the period after treatment. If it includes an overseas vacation, an outdoor event, or long hours of driving, where you expect ultraviolet exposure, you may consider adjusting the timing.
Conversely, if you mostly stay indoors and can apply sunscreen consistently, you may not need to base the timing on the season alone. However, the risk does not disappear completely, and it depends on the type and purpose of treatment, so it is decided at the consultation. If you have melasma, the influence of the season may be greater, so a consultation is needed.
If your skin suddenly darkens after ultraviolet exposure, or you feel stinging or get blisters, contact the clinic where you were treated.
Frequently asked questions
Q. If I have an overseas trip planned after treatment, should I postpone?
A. It depends on your schedule and the strength of ultraviolet light at your destination. If you tell us your plans at the consultation, we can look at adjusting the timing together.
Q. If I only stay indoors, can I skip sunscreen?
A. We recommend applying it, because some ultraviolet light (UVA, etc.) passes through window glass. Depending on the type of treatment, the skin may be sensitive to irritation after treatment.
Q. Do I need sunscreen even in the rainy season when there is no sun?
A. Ultraviolet light is present even on cloudy days. It is safer to use it consistently regardless of the weather.
