Acne
Are acne marks and acne scars different? Will they go away on their own?
After acne settles, people hear two things about the marks left behind: that time will take care of it, and that it should be treated quickly.
Both are right. But the answer depends on which stage you are at.
First, we tell pigmentation and scars apart
If the mark is flat and reddish or brownish, it is at the pigmentation stage. In many cases it fades over time, and it can sometimes improve with good sun protection alone. However, red marks and brown marks may follow different courses, so if a mark lingers, have it checked at a consultation.
On the other hand, if you can feel a dent when you touch it or the surface is uneven, it is a scar where the tissue has changed. In this case, it may be hard for it to improve enough on its own over time.
Scars differ by shape
Even among acne scars, the suitable approach differs depending on the shape. This is why it is difficult to handle every scar with one method.
In reality, most faces have several shapes mixed together, so the plan is divided by area, with different methods for each.
If the scar is raised, or if it keeps getting larger and is painful or itchy, do not delay and have it checked at a consultation.
| Shape | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Narrow, deep (ice-pick) | A narrow opening that dips deep downward |
| Wide, gentle (rolling) | Edges that sink in softly |
| Angular edges (boxcar) | Clear borders with walls that are nearly vertical |
| Raised (hypertrophic scar, keloid, etc.) | A scar where the skin surface is raised. The approach differs from pitted scars, so it needs to be distinguished at a consultation |
Frequently asked questions
Q. Can I start scar treatment while I still have active acne?
A. When there is active inflammation, controlling the inflammation is often done first. Depending on the condition, the two may be done together.
Q. Will it improve in one session?
A. Scar treatment usually proceeds step by step over several sessions. It is difficult to reverse it completely in one go.
Q. Does extraction cause scars?
A. Squeezing or picking at home can worsen inflammation and cause scars and pigmentation marks, so it should be avoided. Whether extraction is needed, and when and how to do it, is decided at a consultation after examining the condition.
