Saunas and exercise after treatment: when is it okay?

Gray's Dermatology (Haeundae, Busan)Last updated 2026-10-01

Many people wonder whether they can keep a workout planned for the weekend, or whether they need to cancel a sauna they have already booked.

After treatments that use heat energy, there are principles that are commonly advised. The specific period varies with the type and intensity of the treatment.

Why shouldn't I raise my body temperature?

If your body temperature rises while the heat delivered by the treatment is still in the skin, redness and a feeling of warmth may last longer.

Blood vessels widen, which can worsen swelling or delay recovery. For the same reason, it is often advised to avoid alcohol for a certain period.

What is possible, and from when?

Below is the generally advised guideline, compiled for reference. It varies with the type and intensity of treatment and your individual condition, and if redness, swelling, or warmth remains, it is better to wait longer.

ActivityGenerally advised timing
Gentle cleansing and moisturizingOften possible from the day of treatment
Light makeupOften possible from the next day. Varies with skin condition
Light walkingOften possible from the next day
Exercise that makes you sweatOften advised after 2-3 days
Sauna, jjimjilbang, half-body bathRaises body temperature substantially, so decide carefully, later than the point when sweaty exercise is allowed
AlcoholOften advised after 1-2 days

Frequently asked questions

Q. Can I take a shower on the day of treatment?

A. A short shower with lukewarm water is possible in many cases. A long shower with hot water raises your body temperature, so it is better to avoid it.

Q. What about light machine exercise at the gym?

A. If it is at a level that does not make you sweat much, it is often possible from the next day. However, it is safer to postpone high-intensity exercise that strains the face.

Q. I forgot and went to a sauna. Is that a problem?

A. Redness or warmth may last longer than usual, but in many cases it recovers. If there are blisters, severe pain, or peeling skin, or if symptoms last a long time, please check with the clinic where you were treated.
